The principle of hair removal is based on the Selective Photothermolysis (SPTL) theory. This theory explains laser as a method that induces localized tissue damage without affecting surrounding tissue. Essentially, when light of appropriate wavelength is directed onto the treatment area, melanin in the hair follicles, rather than other tissues, selectively absorbs the light and converts it into heat. This damages the follicles responsible for hair growth, resulting in hair reduction or permanent removal.

Both diode lasers and IPL are used for hair removal by targeting the hair follicle and preventing further hair growth.
